Prezentujemy najciekawsze filmy z ostatniej edycji Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Filmów Krótkometrażowych w Oberhausen, jednej z najważniejszych imprez poświęconych krótkim formom. To kino odważne, eksperymentalne i polityczne, którego autorzy i autorki starają się znaleźć odpowiedni język do opisu dzisiejszej rzeczywistości.

We present the most interesting films from the latest edition of the Oberhausen festival, one of the most important events dedicated to short forms. This is daring, experimental and political cinema, whose authors try to find the right language to describe today’s reality.

Odizolowane od świata zewnętrznego, groteskowe postacie negocjują pandemiczny stan wyjątkowy, używając cytatów językowych z filmów o czasach ostatecznych. Film przywołuje strach, samotność, chorobę, a także scenariusze zagrożenia i obrony.

Isolated from the outside world, grotesque figures negotiate the pandemic state of emergency using language quotes from end-time movies. The video evokes fear, loneliness, illness, as well as threat and defence scenarios.

Dom wakacyjny w wiejskiej szwedzkiej scenerii jest obserwowany przez tajemnicze siły przyjmujące postać
nowoczesnych, miejskich duchów. Przybierają formy, z którymi nie możemy sobie jeszcze poradzić. Kalejdoskopowe wizualizacje, w połączeniu z naprzemiennymi perspektywami mikro i makro, kształtują formę i narrację tego eksperymentalnego hybrydowego filmu
artystycznego, badającego film z posthumanistycznej perspektywy. Film przezwycięża przekonanie, że istnieje różnica między science fiction a naszą żywą rzeczywistością, kondensując trudności w komunikacji w świecie wciąż cierpiącym z powodu skutków globalnej pandemii. Film otrzymał Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen oraz International Critics’ Prize.

A vacation house in a rural Swedish forest setting is observed by mysterious forces transforming into modern ghosts in city life. Shifting into forms of what we cannot yet deal with. Kaleidoscopic visuals following a constant shift between micro and macro perspective inform the form and narrative in this experimental hybrid art movie exploring film from a post-humanist perspective. „Weathering Heights” overcomes the notion that there is a difference between science fiction and our lived reality by condensing the difficulty of communication in a world still suffering from the effects of a global pandemic. The film was awarded the Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen and the International Critics’ Prize.

W 2021 roku w ogarniętej pandemią Brazylii setki tysięcy ludzi wyszły na ulice, by zaprotestować przeciwko
rządowi Bolsonaro. Zainspirowany filmem Joyce Wieland z 1973 roku o tym samym tytule, Solidariedade
portretuje te protesty, skupiając się na ekspresyjności ludzkich rąk, a nie stóp, jak miało to miejsce w filmie Wieland. Gesty czułości, oporu, ochrony, radości czy represji zarejestrowano na Super 8 mm Ektachrome.

In 2021, hundreds of thousands of people took over the streets in Brazil, in the midst of a pandemic, to protest against the Bolsonaro government. Inspired by Joyce Wieland’s 1973 film of the same name, Solidariedade portrays these protests by focusing on the expressiveness of human hands rather than Wieland’s feet. Gestures of affection, resistance, protection, joy or
repression are revealed in these images made in Super 8 mm Ektachrome.

Film dokumentalny ukazuje doświadczenia filmowców Paula Shemisiego i Nizara Saleha, którzy w drodze z Kinszasy do Frankfurtu na prezentację swojego nowego filmu zostali zatrzymani i przetrzymywani
wbrew swojej woli przez tydzień na lotnisku w Angoli. Towarzysząc świadectwu twórców w formie lektora,
nieruchomy obraz okna samolotu pozostaje na ekranie przez cały czas, dając wyraz iluzji bezpiecznej/łagodnej
podróży, tak wyraźnie niedostępnej dla ogromnej większości niebiałych pasażerów. Film otrzymał Nagrodę
Jury of the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The documentary report sheds light on the experience of filmmakers Paul Shemisi and Nizar Saleh, who were
stopped and held against their will for a week at an airport in Angola on their way from Kinshasa to Frankfurt to present their new film. Accompanying the testimony provided by the filmmakers in the form of voiceover, the fixed image of an airplane window remains on screen throughout lending expression to the illusion of safe/smooth travel so plainly out of reach to the vast majority of non-white passengers. The film was awarded the
Prize of the Jury of the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

„Magiczne”, „marzycielskie” i „performatywne” współistnieją w świecie „Las Traviesas” – grupy transkobiet ze społeczności Embera, żyjących i pracujących w kolumbijskim regionie kawy. Estetyczne i konceptualne uniwersum ze szczególnym piętnem, w którym dokument i fikcja wspólnie malują obraz walki o utrzymanie rdzennej tożsamości. Film otrzymał nagrodę 3sat Emerging Talent Prize.

The magical, the dreamlike and the performative coexist in the particular world of “Las Traviesas” – a group of
trans women from the Embera community, living and working in the Colombian coffee region. An aesthetic and conceptual universe with a particular stamp, in which documentary and fiction are indistinct palettes to draw the struggle to maintain indigenous identity. Film
was awarded the 3sat Emerging Talent Prize.
