>>> Oberhausen retrospective

During CINEMAFORUM in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut we will present two special blocks of films from the legendary festival in Oberhausen, famous as the arena of the boldest experiments in the short film. The first set will contain the best films from the last years of the event’s history, and the second one will consist of the most interesting international titles from the last 65th edition of the festival in 2018.

Best of Oberhausen: XXI century

RAYMOND
reż. / dir.: Nina Yuen
11’ / USA 2014

An intimate film about the relationship between the artist and her father, taking place on the island of Hawaii, where she grew up. Yuen indirectly sketches a picture of her background, and what knowledge, spiritual, and emotional baggage she has carried away from it.

COAL SPELL
reż. / dir.: Sun Xun
8‘ / China 2008

Inspired by an old five yuan RMB note, the artist gives an account of the rise and fall of Fuxin, an old industrial city located in north-eastern China questioning both the notion of history and of power

ELEGANCE
reż. / dir.: Virpi Suutari
25’ / Finland 2015

The film documents the style and elegance of grey partridge and pheasant hunting through a group of Finnish gentlemen hunters.

SIEBEN MAL AM TAG BEKLAGEN WIR UNSER LOS UND NACHTS STEHEN WIR AUF, UM NICHT ZU TRÄUMEN
reż. / dir.: Susann Maria Hempel
18’ / Germany 2014

A cinematic devotional book. Based on interviews with an unemployable sufferer (and his fellows), living in the East German countryside who lost his memory in 1989 and woke up into several nightmares.

WATER MARKS
reż. / dir.: Meshy Koplevitch,
4’ / Israel 2016

About a personal memory of childhood and youth in Kibbutz Dafna, located near Israel’s borders with Syria and Lebanon. Shelters, gas masks, thundering missiles, and buzzing helicopters are background to the brook’s water flow, sweet music, selective palette and minimalistic linework that tune down the nightmares

THE DAY BEFORE THE END
reż. / dir.: Lav Diaz,
16’ / Philippines 2015

In the year 2050, the Philippines brace for the coming of the fiercest storm ever to hit the country. And as the wind and waters start to rage, poets are being murdered.

DAD’S STICK
reż. / dir.: John Smith
5’ / Great Britain 2012

An oblique portrait of the filmmaker’s father based upon three objects that he showed his son shortly before he died.

ONE MINUTE SOUNDSCULPTURE (RYOJI IKEDA)
reż. / dir.: Daniel Franke
1’ / Germany 2010

Director illustrates a short piece of electroacoustic music – matches a sequence of static noise and test sounds with the picture of an empty, square gallery space.

Oberhausen – international contest 2018

A BRANCH OF A PINE IS TIED UP
reż. / dir.: Murata Tomoyasu
17’ / Japan 2017

The twins are separated by a Tsunami. A snow globe connects the present and the past. While going back and forth between the present and the past, the dead twin girl gets her memories back. The moon overlaps the sun and the past connects to reality. The rabbit leads; the girl remembers all her memories of the land of the dead.

SEASON OF GOODBYES
reż. / dir.: Philippa Ndisi-Hermann
14’ / Kenya 2018

“The seasons had not decided on their endings and beginnings, so we lived in the space between.” A letter to a loved one exploring the unity and separation that come with life and loss.

MY MAMMA IS BOSSIES
reż. / dir.: Naomi van Niekerk
3’ / RPA 2017

My mum’s bonkers. Out of one eye she cries Puccini, out of the other she reprimands me.

FROM THE DARK DEPTHS
reż. / dir.: Kiri Dalena
27’ / Philippines 2017

A woman mourns the drowning of a young communist revolutionary that took place years ago. She sinks into herself and recreates a story that coalesces memory, delirium, and forgetting.

SALADDIN CASTIQUE
reż. / dir.: Anssi Kasitonni
6’ / Finland 2018

A man walks through the forest and tries to find berries. Instead, he finds an empty French dressing bottle. A genie comes out of the bottle and grants the man three wishes. The man uses the wishes traditionally, but constantly resorts to bad language which the genie does not approve of. So the man is going to learn a lesson.

SADDER THAN PLAYTIME ON A RAINY DAY
reż. / dir.: Lobo Mauro
14’ / Brasil 2018

Scenes of the refurbishment of Maracanã stadium in 2012 for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The television narration of the humiliating defeat of the Brazilian soccer team by Germany with a score of 1:7. Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment vote by the Lower House of Congress in 2016.
